Symptoms of chlamydia

You can’t always notice a chlamydia infection. Mostly it’s also passed on unnoticed. The first symptoms usually appear within 3 weeks after infection. Men and women experience different symptoms.

How do you get Chlamydia?

The chlamydia becterium is easy to transmit. It causes inflammation in the genitals, anus, cervix or throat. The bacteria is tranmitted by having sex. Having safe sex (using condoms) is the best way to prevent infection. Chlamydia has a transmition rate of 32/40 % per act of intercourse (32 % for female to men, 40 % men to female).

Chlamydia treatment

Antibiotics can easily treat chlamydia. Your partner will also have to receive the antibiotic treatment at the same time. After a week of antibiotic treatment the infection is not contagious anymore. It is advised to not have sex (even with hands or mouth) for at least a week.

If you do not treat chlamydia

It is important to treat chlamydia in time. A neglected chlamydia infection can cause serious health issues.

In women:

  • inflammation in the pelvic area
  • inflammation in the fallopian tubes
  • reduced fertility
  • chronic abdominal pain
  • ectopic pregnancy (tubal pregnancy)

In men:

  • inflammation in the prostate
  • inflammation in the testicals
  • impaired fertility

Chlamydia and pregnancy?

Being pregnant while having chlamydia can affect the pregnancy. The child may be born prematurely or can be born with low birth weight. During birth you can transfer chlamydia to your baby and, which can cause an eye infection or pneumonia.
